Finally got to stay at a Getaway House. Getaway House is a small company that offers escapes to tiny, wooden cabins situated within the woods. They have cabins in New York, Washington D.C., Boston, and more locations coming in the future. They are perfect for getaways and unplugging from technology. I’ve been wanting to stay at one for a long time, and I decided to book a stay for my boyfriend’s birthday. It was truly a lovely time away from the city. Our most favorite part was the large window by the bed that overlooked the woods. Waking up the next morning to this view was breathtaking and inspiring, and I hope one day I can have a little house upstate with a large window just like it.
The cabin has a bathroom and a mini kitchen equipped with an electric stovetop, as well as a small table for eating. The kitchen has some dinnerware and cookware for basic cooking, and it’s stocked with snacks and basic ingredients to make a pasta meal, for purchase. There is a complimentary s’mores kit, and a little booklet with suggestions and activities to recharge and go off the grid.
For dinner, we made a little homemade cheese plate, a simple shrimp boil seasoned with just Old Bay and aromatics, and skewered, marinated pork grilled over the campfire. To finish off the meal, we roasted homemade marshmallows to go with the s’mores kit.

Good to Know:
- Book in advance! I booked about four months in advance for May, and even then most of the weekends were already booked!
- Beware of bugs. If you don’t like bugs, you might not like the Getaway House. They are inevitably part of the woods.
- Prepare in advance for food. The Getaway House provides some snacks and basic ingredients to make a simple pasta meal for purchase, but I think to make it really fun, think about stopping at a supermarket before and buy some ingredients to make fun campfire-inspired meals. Their blog provides campfire-friendly recipes.
