I recently got a Balmuda toaster and have been making so much toast that my thoughts on the toaster will have to be a separate post! It is definitely one of our favorite purchases. But I wanted to share a pizza toast that I’ve been making so much with it, inspired by the “Bee Sting” pizza from pizzeria and restaurant, Roberta’s. It has mozzarella, tomato, soppressata, chili, basil, and honey. It’s sweet and spicy from the chili and honey, and zesty and savory from the tomato sauce and soppressata. It’s a pizza I often dream about, and I order delivery from Roberta’s whenever I crave pizza. One summer in NYC, near my work office, Roberta’s was one of the food vendors participating in Madison Square Eats. I can’t count how many times throughout the summer that I would visit only their stall for lunch (…and dinner to take home, sometimes!) to order an individual personal Bee Sting pie. It’s so good.
For this toast, I use Mike’s Hot Honey. I don’t know if Roberta’s uses that specific honey, but it’s addictive and I love it especially on fried chicken and biscuits. I also opt for Japanese milk bread (also called shokupan) whenever I make toast because of its wonderful fluffy and soft texture. You can buy them from most Chinese, Korean, and Japanese bakeries, or you can make it yourself like I do. But, you can use any white bread in place of it if you don’t have milk bread.
Pizza Milk Bread Toast with Hot Honey and Soppressata
Makes 2 toasts, as a snack
Inspired by Roberta’s Bee Sting
Ingredients
2 slices of milk bread, 1-inch tall, or other choice of bread
1/3 cup of pizza sauce
1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
2-3 slices of soppressata
Mike’s Hot Honey or regular honey
Red pepper chili flakes
Parsley flakes
- Divide and spread pizza sauce between the two slices of bread, then divide and sprinkle the shredded cheese over the sauce.
- Tear the soppressata slices into shreds and divide amongst the slices of bread. If using the Balmuda Toaster, set the toaster setting to Pizza Mode, and set the timer to 3 minutes or until the cheese is browned. If you are using a regular toaster, broil until the cheese is well browned.
- Drizzle Mike’s Hot Honey and garnish a sprinkle of chili flakes and dried parsley to serve. If you are using regular honey, add more chili flakes as you like. Enjoy immediately!
